Shares of News Corp popped in 1986 on the launch of its Fox Broadcasting channel. From 1987 through 1991, NWSA shares traded flat. By 1992, investors began to take notice of the viability of News Corp’s media outlets. NWSA stock topped $10 by late 1993, $15 by 1998, and an all time high above $20 in March of 2000. The dot.com bust, 2002 recession, print media problems, and a dearth of earnings drivers sent News Corp stock tumbling below $10/share. A broad-based rally in equity prices helped NWSA recover towards $25/share by 2007, but the ensuing recession wiped News Corp’s entire prior 5-year advance.
After bouncing off the mid-November lows, media outlets faced a difficult January. News Corp shares closed at $9.09 on December 31st and $6.39 on January 30th, representing a 30% decline.
