Microsoft shares closed at $27.75 on the day of its IPO in 1986. Following a series of stock splits in the early 90's, Microsoft shares rose from low-single digits to an all time high above $58/share at the beginning of the century. By the beginning of 2001, shares had dropped into the low $20/share range. For most of the next 8 years, Microsoft would stay near a tight range in the upper $20/share.
