Delta bought Chicago and Southern Air Lines in 1953, Northeast Airlines in 1972, and merged with Western Airlines in 1987. Delta acquired Northwest Airlines in October 2008, making it the largest commercial carrier worldwide.

Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, Southwest Airlines is a low cost-airline carrying the most passengers in the U.S. Southwest has the second-largest commercial passenger aircraft fleet in the U.S., operating about 3,500 flights each day.

Southwest was incorporated in 1967 as Air Southwest by Rollin King and Herb Kelleher to serve Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Changing its name to Southwest Airlines in 1971, the carrier's first flight was on June 18, 1971. Southwest turned its first annual profit in 1973 and is now one of the largest U.S. airlines by revenue.
