Delta acquired Northwest Airlines in October 2008, making it the largest commercial carrier worldwide.

Southwest was incorporated in 1967 as Air Southwest by Rollin King and Herb Kelleher to serve Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Changing its name to Southwest Airlines in 1971, the carrier's first flight was on June 18, 1971. Southwest turned its first annual profit in 1973 and is now one of the largest U.S. airlines by revenue.
