Wal-Mart History

For most of Wal-Mart's early existence, it traded as a penny stock. By 1986, the discount retailer began to see upward momentum. The early 90's were kind to Wal-Mart, breaking through into the double-digit range by April of 1991. From 1993 until 1996, shares of Wal-Mart were considered dead money, trading mostly flat. But shares of the retailer surged to a new all-time high near $70/share by the end of the decade. During the new decade, shares fluctuated from the mid-50's to mid 40's before riding the discount wave back near their all-time high.
