A recent court decision ordering MGA Entertainment to turn over its Bratz line to Mattel will be contested by MGA. Mattel will face a decision on how it will proceed with the $1 billion plus product line given MGA?s likely appeal. Mattel holds its shareholder meeting on May 13th.
Mattel incurred a $51 million loss in the quarter ended March 31, 2009, or $0.14/share, widening from a $46.6 million loss, or $0.13/share, in the year ago period. Revenues tumbled 15% to $785.6 million, most attributable to a 23% decline overseas ? 13% of which was due to an appreciating dollar. Analysts expected a net loss of $0.13/share on $796 million in revenues. Gross margins improved to 44% from 43.2%.
Barbie brand, which accounts for roughly 80% of Mattel?s sales, jumped 18% thanks to the 50th anniversary of its iconic doll.
