Hasbro reported a 47% drop in Q1 profits on lower discretionary spending over the first 3 months of 2009 as well as a dollar rally that cut into overseas sales. Profits dipped to $19.7 million, or $0.14/share, versus $37.5 million, or $0.05/share, in the same period last year. Sales dipped to $621.3 million from $704.2 million. Hasbro's international unit realized a $14.5 million loss compared with a $13 million gain last year. Gross margins slipped to $60.6%, a 0.9% decrease.
Hasbro holds its annual shareholder meeting on May 21st. On June 24, 2009, the sequel to 2007's live-action film Transformers hits theaters. The second film, titled Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, is one of the most heavily anticipated films due out this summer.
