The debut of Hasbro's Transformers line kicked off the first real interest in the company's stock, rising from a penny stock to $8/share by the summer of 1986. After temporarily dipping towards $1/share in the late 80's, Hasbro would eventually climb to a then all-time high over $34/share in April of 1999. The turn of the century recession pummeled Hasbro back down into the teens where it would languish until 2003. The success of the live-action Transformers films helped the toy maker hit a new-all time high above $40/share in 2008 before the global recession cut Hasbro back into the $20-range.
Discretionary spending-sensitive stocks like toy makers benefited from March's bank-led rally. Hasbro shares closed at $22.89 on February 27th and $25.07 on March 31st, representing a 9.5% increase.
