Headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, Lockheed Martin (LMT) is a leading aerospace and defense contractor.
Lockheed specializes in fighter and transport aircraft, air traffic control systems, satellites, national missile defense systems, ballistic missiles, radar, and munitions.
Lockheed is also a big manufacturer for NASA, winning a $3.9 billion contract in 2006 to build the Orion CEV capsule for the Ares I rocket.
Lockheed Corporation and Martin Marietta merged in 1995, effectively forming Lockheed Martin as it is known today. Lockheed purchased Loral Corporation's defense electronics and system integration operations for $9.1 billion in April of 1996. A potential $8.3 billion merger with Northrop Grumman was abandoned in 1998.
