After E-Trade's IPO near $2/share in 1996, its shares climbed to $10 within a year as investors cheered the online brokerage account model. By the end of 1998, ETFC lost is momentum, but a surge in 1999 propelled the stock to an all-time high over $55/share in May of 1999.
The new century would not be nearly as kind to ETFC shares which plummeted back to their mid-90's range. The bull market from 2004-2006 helped E-Trade recover above $20/share, but the onset of systemic risk following the credit and housing market meltdown
E-Trade succumbed to continued weakness in the financial sector during February. On January 30th, ETFC closed at $1.13 and on February 27 it closed at $0.80, marking a 29% decline.
