In the 15 years after divesting itself of regional bell companies in 1982, AT&T shares gradually ascended from about $5/share to the mid-20’s by 1997. The tech boom of the late 90’s provided a backdrop for AT&T, then known as SBC Communications, to run an all-time high just under $60/share in the summer of 1999. Rocky trading at the turn of the century saw the telecom’s shares drop below $40 and rise over $56/share in the span of less than a year.
During 2001 and 2001, momentum in AT&T ran into a wall, sending its shares back into the mid-20’s where they would remain for the next 4 years. The acquisition of AT&T Corp and subsequent name change to AT&T would provide the impetus for the company’s shares to rally over $40/share, but the global meltdown in 2007 erased any market momentum.
Shares of AT&T fell 3.4% during February, following the broad-market lower as global equity prices continue to unwind.
