Shares of Alcoa doubled in price from the mid-80's to the early 90's. Following a steady period of growth from the mid-90's until March 1999, Alcoa spiked up sharply from $20/share to a then all-time high over $42 in January 2000. Over the next 8 years, Alcoa's stock vacillated between $19 and its all-time high above $47, trading for the most part around $30/share. By the time of the 2007-2009 recession, Alcoa would plummet about 80% to trade around $10/share.
Basic materials rallied hard in April, riding broad-market enthusiasm spilling over from the banking segment. On March 31st, Alcoa closed at $7.34 on March 31st and $9.07 on April 30th, representing a 23% surge.
