Tesla Motors Inc. - Tesla Motors designs, manufactures and sells electric vehicles and advanced electric vehicle power train components. The company is headquartered in Palo Alto, Calif., and employees more than 600 people. It currently holds 14 patents, with another 95 pending.
Tesla Motors was founded in 2003 by a group of engineers from Silicon Valley, who wanted to prove that electric vehicles could look good and still be efficient. The first Tesla Roadster was produced in 2008 and more than 1,000 of the vehicles were on the road in less than two years. The vehicle, which operates free of emissions, was being driven in more than 25 countries. It can be recharged by plugging it into almost any electrical outlet in the world.
Tesla claims its battery packs and power trains will help lessen dependence on oil and drive down the cost of electric vehicles. Through cooperation with other car manufacturers, Tesla hopes to put more electric cars on the street.
Tesla vehicles operate similar to gasoline-powered vehicles in all other manners. The Tesla Roadster goes from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. It gets 245 miles per charge.
The Tesla Model S will be the company's first sedan. It is being produced by the company at the Tesla Factory. It will go from 0 to 60 in 5.6 seconds has a range of 300 miles per charge. Deliveries on the Model S vehicles are expected to begin in 2012.
