John McCain's appearance after standing up Letterman

After the 2008 election, the Republican Party went into hiding. Senator John McCain got an early start.

In October of 2008, the Presidential candidate cancelled a scheduled appearance on the Letterman Show, much to the chagrin of the host. Letterman made several jokes at the Senator's expense in the following days after learning that McCain instead met with CBS anchor Katie Couric and attended a conference the following day.

When McCain finally did show up, he remarked that he "screwed up". Letterman also pressed the Senator on several comments made regarding Barack Obama "palling around with terrorists". McCain maintained a jovial attitude despite Letterman's prodding, commenting that he "hasn't had so much fun since his last interrogation."

In the end, McCain's disappearance and reappearance made little difference. Barack Obama carried 52.9% of the popular vote and 365 electoral votes to McCain's 45.7% and 173 electoral votes. McCain lost several swing states, including Letterman's home state of Indiana.
