Bernie Madoff has come to epitomize the greed and gluttony of Wall Street that led to the collapse of the global economy. Madoff's $65 billion ponzi scheme that defrauded thousands of investors came to light in December 2008, in the midst of one of the worst worldwide economic collapses since the Great Depression.
Madoff's wife, Ruth, is equally indictable for her Scrooge-like ways. Just days before Madoff was scrambling to find funds to pad over his historic fraud, she withdrew $5.5 million from a fund her husband was a part owner in. On the same day Bernie owned up to his deception, Ruth again withdrew millions, this time it was $10 million from her own account. Later, Ruth would try and claim $69 million in personal fortunes exempt from her husband.
Madoff pled guilty to multiple charges and will almost certainly spend the rest of his life in jail.
