The Straits Times Index is a market value-weighted stock index made up of 30 companies traded on the Singapore Exchange. The Straits Times Index replaced the Straits Times Industrial Index in 1998 and represented 78 percent of the average daily traded value over a 12-month period.
The Straits Times Index was put together by the Singapore Press Holdings, the Singapore Exchange and professor Tse Yiu Kuen from the Singapore Management University. The index is reviewed formally once each year or whenever else necessary to meet the requirements established by the regulations.
The Straits Times Index involves the total market capitalization of the companies weighted by their effect on the index, so the larger stocks would make more of a difference to the index as compared to a smaller cap company.
Subsectors in the STI are: aerospace and defense, general industries, industrial engineering, industrial transportation, food producers, general retailers, media, travel and leisure, fixed line telecom, banks, real estate, and general financials.
