S&P CNX Nifty

The Standard & Poor's CRISIL NSE Index 50, or the "Nifty" is one of the leading indices for large cap companies in the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in India. These 50 stocks are well diversified and cover more than 20 sectors within the country's economy.

The NSE, the largest exchange in India in relation to number of trades, deals in both derivative and equity trading. Owned by a number of leading financial institutions, banks and insurance companies, the NSE is one of the two most significant exchanges in the country, the other being the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Although the management and ownership of the exchange operates as a separate entity, there are two significant foreign investors, Goldman Sachs and NYSE Euronext who have substantial shares in the NSE.

As of October 2007, the NSE had a market cap of all the companies listed of 1.46 trillion, making it the second largest stock exchange in South Asia, and the third largest in term of equity trades in the world.

The CRISIL, or the Credit Rating and Information Services of India Ltd. is the country's leading Research, Ratings, Risk and Policy Advisory Company. The company offers a wide range of customer services ranging from opinions and solutions related to credit rating and risk assessment, to research on the country's economy, independent information on industries and companies and the global markets as a whole. The CRISIL's majority shareholder is the S&P.
