IPC Stock Exchange

The IPC, also known as the Indice de Precios y Cotizaciones, is an index of 35 leading stocks found on the Bolsa Mexicana de Valores or Mexican Stock Exchange. The makeup of the exchange is examined every two months.

The Mexican Stock Exchange is the country's only stock exchange; it is the second largest in Latin America. Its headquarters is in Mexico City and its value is estimated at more than $600 billion. The exchange dates back to 1850, the year the Mexican mining stocks were first traded. In 1975 it incorporated with the Guadalajara and Monterrey exchanges.

In 1985 the exchange introduced an electronic trading system for debt instruments. In 1996 electronic trading began for equities and in 1998 a system was developed to administer the operation of debt market and trading. In 1999 the entire stock market became an electronic exchange.

The main price index is the IPC. The stocks in the index are: Alfa, America Movil, America Telecom, Apasco, Carso Telekom, Cel V unit of Iusacell, Cemex, Consorcio Ara, Contraladora Comercial Mexicana, Corporacion Interamericana de Entretenimiento, Desc, Fomento Economico Mexicano, Grupo Bimbo, Grupo Carso, Grupo Continental, Grupo Elektra, Grupo Financiero Banorte, Grupo Financiero BBVA Bancomer, Grupo Financiero Inbursa, Grupo Industrial Saltillo, Grupo Iusacell, Grupo Mexico, Grupo Modelo, Empresas ICA Sociedad Controladora, Industrias Penoles, Kimberly-Clark, Organizacion Soriana, Savia, Telmex, Televisa, TV Azteca, U.S. Commerical, Vitro, Walmex.

The companies of Carlos Slim represent 43 percent of the index. Slim, 69, is a wealthy Mexican businessman and philanthropist whose fortune is based in the telecommunications industries. He is one of the wealthiest men in the world, with a net worth of more than $60 billion.
