Market influences

Many factors are known to have influence on moving the stock market, either upward or downward: announcements by the Federal Reserve chairman, inflation reports, unemployment reports, home sales reports, etc. Other influences aren't always as easy to quantify. For example, a hurricane might rip through the Gulf of Mexico and turn aside with little damage, but disrupt oil production and distribution that can cause a chain reaction throughout the country.
